US student convicted of burning down abortion clinic
His trial caused a lot of talk in the United States. A student who set fire to the only abortion clinic in Wyominga state located in the western United States, was sentenced Thursday, September 28 to five years in prison, several American media reported.
Lorna Roxanne Green, 22, admitted to breaking into the Wellspring Health Access clinic in Casper in May 2022, and having spilled gasoline there. The inauguration of the clinic was planned a few weeks later.
According to court documents consulted by the local newspaper Oil City News, she told the police “that she did not like abortion and had nightmares which she attributed to her anxiety about the opening of the abortion clinic”. “She then decided to burn down the building“, the documents state.
A right revoked in many American states
The opening of the clinic was delayed for several weeks due to the damagemaking access to abortion in Wyoming even more difficult.
Abortion remains legal in this conservative state, but Republican elected officials have been trying to restrict it since the decision of the United States Supreme Court in June 2022 to overturn the constitutional protection of abortion.
In the months that followed, many conservative states have restrictions in place – going as far as a total ban.
