Sweden has proposed introducing life sentences for teenagers
The leader of the right-wing Sweden Democrats party, Jimmis Åkesson, believes that the age of criminal responsibility should be lowered from 15 to 13 years.
“I believe that if you are old enough to commit a serious violent crime, then you are also old enough to accept the consequences of it… My starting point is that once dangerous people are sent to prison, they no longer represent dangers to legitimate people… Gang violence is also spreading over time. Criminal networks recruit 10- and 11-year-olds, 12-13-year-olds handle weapons and explosives, and in some cases 14-15-year-olds carry out shootings,” he told Swedish Radio.
Earlier, Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said that the Swedish authorities will introduce special inspection zones in cities from March 1, 2024 as one of the measures to combat crime. In them, law enforcement officers will be able to conduct searches of all citizens without exception.
