Therapist Romasov: You can listen to music on headphones for no more than an hour a day

Prolonged and regular listening to music with headphones can lead to hearing damage. In addition, their use can provoke the formation of sulfur plugs and the introduction of infections. Gazeta.Ru was informed about this by the press service of the medical company Invitro.

Therapist Ivan Romasov explained that, according to a study conducted as part of the American NHANES (National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey) program, headphones can really damage your hearing. In it, scientists used two methods to verify this data: survey and audiometry. The study involved 3,583 people aged 20 to 69 years who regularly used headphones.

The results showed that hearing impairment was twice as common in men as in women. Additionally, the older a person is, the more likely they are to experience hearing loss when using headphones.

“It is necessary not to play music louder than 85 dB – daily sound at this level for more than 60-80 minutes in the future can lead to hearing loss. According to the standards of the World Health Organization (WHO), if the music volume in the player is 60%, you can listen to it for no more than 60 minutes a day,” the therapist added.

The doctor also advised to monitor the cleanliness of the headphones – the devices should be regularly cleaned of dirt and dust. Neglect of hygiene can provoke the formation of wax plugs in the ears and contribute to the penetration of infections into the body.
