A new island was discovered near the Novaya Zemlya archipelago

Members of the Arctic expedition of the Northern Fleet announced the discovery of a new island. It is located in the area of Zayachaya Bay near the Rykachev glacier on the Novaya Zemlya archipelago.

The expedition also carried out hydrographic research in the bay near the Vera glacier. This area was mapped in the 1950s, and since then the glacier has moved more than nine kilometers inland.

In addition, it was possible to establish that the Admiralty Peninsula temporarily turns into an island in the summer. The narrow channel that runs through it fills with water during melting, reports “Russian newspaper” with reference to the press service of the Federation Council.

The complex expedition of the Northern Fleet and the Russian Geographical Society (RGS) “Remember the War” found two ships that were lost during the Great Patriotic War: the rescue ship “Shkval” and the transport ship “Dixon”. At the same time, several vessels could not be found according to official coordinates: the minesweeper “T-120”, the transport “Kuibyshev” and the tugboat “Medvezhonok”, the barge “P-4”.

In 2020, the Expedition of the Russian Geographical Society and the Northern Fleet found a 19th century food warehouse. It was located on the western coast of the Northern Island of the Novaya Zemlya archipelago.
